Italians Open New Paper Mill in Fabriano

The people of Fabriano have just had a boost to their local economy with the opening of a brand new, state of the art paper mill.
Since the birth of paper in China, the linen rags which are used for pulp were mashed using a mortar and wooden piston. This time consuming and very laborious process has been replaced by the revolutionary introduction of the hydraulic hammer pile.

These hammers were operated by water wheels powered by the river.

Another innovation being considered by the owners is the substitution of gelatin glue sizing extracted from the discarded meat of the local tanners rather than the time-honoured use of wheat-starch sizing. The old methods caused the rather inconvenient deterioration of the sheets of paper. It is hoped that this new gelatin-sizing will help to preserve the paper longer, increase it's strength and make it more usable with writing inks.

Perhaps the most important inovation being introduced this year is the introduction of something called a "watermark". This distinction is already practiced by the wool makers that impress manufacturing “marks” on their products. When observed against the light it reveals a sign or mark indicating the different qualities of paper produced.
