Storyboard Scene 4
Scene 4 panel 1:
“Tonight will be my ultimate
triumph!”
Upshots are used for dramatic purposes to convey a feeling that the character within the scene is dominant over the viewer or another character within the story. Here the use of not only the camera angle but also the character’s hand as a strong foreground element helps to convey a much more powerful feeling to the scene and action within. This is usually followed by a downshot within a scene or two as in this case with scene 6.

I chose to use very abstract backgrounds within this cartoon which do not follow the normal pattern seen in many cartoons. There is usually a flow to the scenes and backgrounds so as to convey a feeling of continuity in respect to the placement of the camera in relation to both the characters and the environment.

I changed the design of the background so that the primary and secondary elements: the character and the dramatic shadow on the wall would be dominant. The background to a certain extent becomes a non entity, just so long as it serves the purpose of the primary elements.

Could I have gone with a background that follows the location established in scene 3? Probably. But the detailing of the brick might interfere with the shadow behind the character. It could go either way with strong arguments for either side. At this point it’s more of an art direction decision. This falls under my second rule for drawing: It doesn’t matter how it gets done just so long as it looks good.

Does it look good? Well, that’s pretty much a subjective decision.
